Speedwell Explorer Code of Conduct

As an Explorer Scout I undertake that I will obey the Scout Law and comply with the following code:

1. Explorer Scouts (Explorers) should respect all other Scouts, Scout Leaders and other members of the Scout Association and should ensure that their behaviour is at all times appropriate to the Scout meeting or activity they are taking part in and that it does not cause offence to others.

2. Explorers should attend Unit meetings on a regular basis and if they are unable to attend, inform their leader, preferably in advance, or at least as soon as practical.

3. Explorers should ensure that they pay their membership subscriptions on time.

4. Explorers should wear their Explorer Scout uniform to all Explorer meetings and activities, unless they are informed that alternative clothing is required or permitted.

5. Explorers are not permitted to smoke on any Scouting activities.

6. Explorers are not permitted to bring alcohol to, or consume alcohol on, any Scouting activities.

7. Explorers should not bring any offensive weapons, such as firearms or knives on any Scouting activity. Folding type penknives are permitted, at the discretion of the Explorer Leader, providing the blade is no longer than 75mm or 3 inches in length. There may be specific exemptions for certain activities and the Leader organising the activity will explain these.

8. Explorers must not take to or use any illegal drugs on a Scout activity. This also applies to solvents and the misuse of prescribed medication.

9. On all camps and overnight activities, all Explorers must sleep in their own allocated tents or accommodation and any changes of sleeping arrangements must have the permission of the Scout Leader in charge of the event before it takes place. No mixed sleeping arrangements are permitted and no Explorer should go into the sleeping accommodation of a member of the opposite sex.

10. Explorers must ensure that at all times they fully understand and observe the specific rules that apply to the activity they are taking part in.

Penalties for breach of this Code or the Scout Law.

a. Minor Misconduct or First Offence - The Explorer will be told not to take any further part in all or part of a meeting or activity, depending on the severity of the breach. This may mean that the Explorer has to leave the meeting or event immediately.

b. Major Misconduct or Second Offence - The Explorer will be suspended from their Unit for up to 3 months. In most cases the suspension will also apply to all Scouting activities. The suspension will be confirmed by the District Commissioner.

c. Serious Misconduct or Third Offence - The Explorer will be suspended immediately. The matter will be referred to the District Explorer Scout Commissioner and he may decide in consultation with the District Commissioner, that the Explorer is asked to leave the Scout Association.

Repeated minor offences will be interpreted as major or serious misconduct.

The Explorer Unit Leader, the District Explorer Scout Commissioner or the District Commissioner can apply these penalties.
